THE DEFENCE FORCES.

APPIJCANTS FOR STAFF APPOINT-

MENTS,

WELLINGTON, September 24,

About 300 applications were received for the vacancies on the New Zealand Staff from returned soldiers. Of these 47 -were chosen to go into camp for training and testing by- a board consisting of Generals Robin, Russell, Richardson and Hart. They are nearly, all decorated and very few are seniors, preference being given to younger men. Among these are three V.C.'s (Lieutenants Andrew, Judson. and Friokleton). They have still to prove their fitness, and this selection does not necessarily mean their actual appointment. The Otago officers hi the selection for staff appointments are:—Major Bishop. Captain Walker, Lieutenants Murphy, Hunt, Gustafson, and Jacob.
