THE OTIRA TUNNEL.

MINISTERIAL ASSURANCES. WELLINGTON, September 13. Replying to a Canterbury and West Coast deputation regarding the Otira tunnel, Mr Massey said to-day that he waa as anxious as anyone to complete the tunnel, and reminded "tho deputation that the work had been continued throughout the war. Sir W. Fraser said a third shift had been at work for a month, but he regretted that ho had been unable to find men to bring the total to 203. Referring to the roquest that £1 per day be paid to the workers, he said that men on contract were earning 22s lOd. He could secure a report on tho housing conditions. He finally assured the deputation that the pla.nt for the electrification of the tunnel would be ready before the tunnel was finished.
