SOLDIERS' SOCIAL
The ladies from the Telephone Exchange and Telegraph Department last night gave a social evening to returned soldiers_ at the Otago Soldiers' Club associated with th# Y.M.C.A. Tliere was a very large attendance. Miss Hutchison, supervisor of the Telephone Exchange, was responsible for the programme and the arrangewhich proved most successful. Songa, recitations, musical monologues, competition s ? and games were the order of the evening, the programme being supplied bj the following:—Miss Wynne (song), Mia* Johnston (musical monologue), Miss M. I. Ross (song), Miss Lowry (recitation), Mr M'Grath (song), Miss Sullivan song), Mia King (sailor's hornpipe and sang), and Mi«i Guy (song). During the evening refreshments were provided by the ladies, Mr G. W. W. B. Hughes, returned supervising secretary for New Zealand, wa» warmly welcomed, and he replied in a brief address, in which he bespoke the interest of returned men on behalf of the Y.M.C.A. stating that the Y.M.C.A. still had the 'interest of soldiers at heart. Mr J. V. Hanna, eecretary of the Soldiers' Club, in addressing those present, paid * high tribute to the women of England and Scotland for the way in which they had opened their homes .to the boys from New Zealand, and also for the services rendered in the various organisations set up to serve the men while on leave, • He said that Now Zealand people could not thank those people sufficiently for all they had* doneHe trusted that while the women had found themselves capable of doing a work such as that done in the past, they would not consider the task finished, but only commencing, and would still carry on in & similar manner, and' thus help to bring about better social conditions among the young men and women in our own citiee. Mr Hanna added that it was his purpose to organise nightly entertainments, so that the men would always have some amusement each night.
