CANTERBURY GRAIN AND PRODUCE MARKETS.
CHRISTCHURCH, August 8. There Is very little, if any, improvement showing in the market except for seeds that are required for spring sowing. There Is nothing fresh to report in wheat, and the foot that just over 6,000.000 bushels have already been reported as thrashed, indicates that with Australian importations there will be ample for the year’s requirements, Unices, however; there is a heavy
sowing of spring wheat next "season's crop will be a very short one, as the very dry autumn, and the early winter, prevented much early sowing from being done. Algerian oats for spring sowing are in good demand, and are now worth up to 4s 6d at country stations, and the same level of price is also reached by Duns. There is no improvement in Gartons, which are nominally equal to 3s 9d to 4&, at country stations. There is, however, practically no business doing with growers. There are no changes in cocksfoot or ryegrass, but clovers have still further firmed, red clover being quoted at Is 5d to Is 7d, and white Is 4d to Is sd, at country stations. The demand for ryegrass and other seeds is expected to improve next week, whey tne large pastoralists and farmers who will be in the oity will place their spring orders. The potato market has shown some fluctuations lately, but to-day the tone is said to be easier again. The price at country stations is variously quoted at £1 15s to £B, the latter figure being offered to secure prompt delivery when required. Wet weather during the week has been against the handling of potatoes on the farm. Shippers are meeting with a difficulty in securing space for peas, on Home boats, but the market remains firm, and 7s 6d is now offered! to growers for Partridges. The bulk of the crop is now, however, in merchants' hands.
