WINTER CHAMPIONSHIPS. The Otago provincial championships, held under the auspices of the Otago Chess Club, -were commenced in its rooms, Y.M.CJL buildings, on Tuesday evening end was continued all the week. The following are the results of the play: SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP. A Class. Stenhouse beat Coombs. Coombs beat Myers. Stenhouse beat Amtman. Cleland beat Ward. B Class. Friberg beat Balk. Cleland beat Friberg. Friberg beat Ward. Stenhouse beat Myers. The provincial chess tourney was advanced a stage on .Friday, when Messrs Cleland and Balk met in the Senior Cham : pionship. The former had the move, and played Evan’s , Gambit. Mr Balk, however, conducted the defence admirably, retaining his pawn, and ultimately gaining the exchange with a winning attack. Mr Cleland resigned at a late hour. This makes the score in Section B: Cleland 2, Balk 2, Friburg 2, and these three players will have to play off. The winner will have to meet Stenhouse, winner of Section A, for the Senior Championship. The Junior Championship was concluded also, the' result proving a win for Mr H. H. Henderson.
