PROMOTING AND TRADE.
(By Cable.) LONDON, May 20. Lord Sydenham, on behalf of the British Empire League, tendered a luncheon, at which there was an important gathering of official and commercial men, for the purpose of inaugurating a great Imperial Exhibition in London in 1921. Mr Hughes, Sir J. G. Ward, Sir G. Perley, Sir J.- M'Call, and prominent business men supported the proposal, and the league was instructed to approach the Government on the matter. British school. An Imperial Commercial Association has been formed. Among its objects are:— The protection of British trade and traders wherever their interests are assailed. It also aims to direct public attention to the dangers of any form of restrictions or control threatening to crush individual enterprise • to prevent the export of raw materials or foodstuffs till British requirements are reasonably satisfied ; and to prevent a wasteful Government expenditure. The council con?'ts of 13 leading London merchants, including Lord Inchcape and Mr Weddel. An engraving scholarship, worth £250 yearly for four years, is offered by a British school. —A. and N.Z. Cable. A conference of members of the House of Commons considered a proposal for the formation of a Parliamentary group for the purpose of arranging a scheme of Imperial settlement and forcing it on the Government. CAPETOWN, May 26. An industrial corporation of South Africa is being registered with a capital of £500,000 -with the object of encouraging new industries.
