THE WHEAT DEAL.
STATEMENT BY MINISTER. CHRISTOHURCH, June 2. The Hon. W. D. S. MacDonald, Minister of Agriculture, speaking of the wheat deal, said millers had purchased the same quantity as they had last year—viz., 4,000,000 bushels. From the beginning of May the price had been increased by £d per bushel. Tho Government had given a guarantee to purchase any balance not purchased by millers up to tho beginning of September. Under tho circumstances ho could not understand why there should be any trouble in respect to financial arrangements by farmers. He believed the farmers were satisfied with tho prices offered by the Government, and with the ordinary terms, of guarantee they would be able to sell on the usual terms, and if there was a surplus the' Government would take it over. He felt that the prices offered bv the Government for next year's crop would be sufficient to enable a reason-
able area to be put under wheat, apart altogether from patriotic considerations. As far as ho could gather, tho majority of the farmers were satisfied.
