ROBBERY ON A STEAMER.

AUCKLAND, June 1. & robbery occurred on board the Niagara about 8 p.m. .on Saturday, when clothing and other articles to the value of £SOO was taken from a saloon cabin. On the matter being reported to the detectives at 9 p.m., they searched the vessel until 2 a.m. without result. While a further hearch was being made this morning one of the articles—a fur coat—valued ab £l20 —wa3 found floating near the vessel as though it had been pushed through a port hole. No other articles have been found. June 2. When detectives were investigating the theft from a passenger on the Niagara they found silver valued at £7 and serviette rings valued at £3 10s planted. Two stewards confessed to the theft of these articles. In the Police Court to-day Charles J. Harris, for the theft of the silver, and William Harris, for the theft of the serviette rings, were each sentenced to three months' hard No arrests in connection with the thefts of clothing from the Niagara on Saturday have been made by the police. The thefts were committed just as the passengers had risen from dinner. In all, six cabins were entered, and the value of the clothing and other o-oods stolen is now estimated at £3OO. As previously stated, a very valuable fur coat which was amonjr the stolen articles, was 'found floating in the harbour near the Niagara, and the police incline to the belief that fearing detection, the thieves dumped the whole of the booty overboard on learning that the detectives were aboard. Late to-night a bov reported having found a lady's fur floating m the harbour.
