AN AFFAIR OF HONOUR.

MINISTER NETTLED OVER CRITICISM. (FBOM OtJH O>VW OOBBESPOKDENT.j WELLINGTON, May 28.

The Hon. W. D. S. MacDonald defended his honour ait the annual Wellington Provincial Conference of the Farmers' Union to-day. The Minister made reference to a remark alleged to have been made at Invercargill. The statement that had been made there he said was that "every member of the Government had his price in connection with the sale of produce."— (Cries of "Shame.") Continuing, the Minister said, with emphasis,. "I am going to Invercargill next week, and I am prepared to tell that man before the biggest audience he can get that he is a liar" (in capital letters). The Minister continued that he did not mind fair criticism, but he would always resist any attack on his honour. Moreover, the inference was made at the Wellington conference yesterday that certain Government action had been taken for political reasons. To this he gave an emphatic denial. He had now been connected with politics for many years, and he challenged anyone to say that he had ever asked for a vote. He claimed that such remarks as that complained of were distinctly unfair and calculated to create wrong impressions.
