WELLINGTON NOTES.

<Froii Oub Own Correspondent* , May 30. The.Taratahi-Carterton Racing Club, which had no races for 18 months, brought off a meeting at the Clareville course on,Thursday. Four Hawkc's Bay horses competed and they were all successful. Tari (a chestnut gelding by Mystification) was considered unbeatable in the Members' Hack Handicap. Ho won very easily from the Trentham-trained homes, Cotillion and Esperance. Tari hails from tho Hawke's Bay district, where he recently won twice. In one of the races he defeated The Speaker, who has since won three races.

The distance of the principal event; tho County Cup, was reduced to seven furlongs, and brought out the best field of the day. Potentiality (Multifid —Hinetitima) was a 'good favourite, and he won nicely from Lady General, with Matatua and Birkenvale next. The latter tried to win from end to end, but failed to see tho distance out. Matty (now trained at Trentham) was among the unplaced division. The Trial Plate fi<:dd included three two-year-olds, and two of them ran first and sc-eond. American Beauty (Demosthenes — Rose Shield) tried to win all tho way,

but Parorangi (Demosthenes —Pellicle) wore her down in the last 100 yarcb. They finished on the outside of the track, and the rider of Parorangi was cautioned. Parorangi was purchased at Mr E. Short's sale for 575 gs by W. Higgins, a patron of A. M'Auley's Tauherinik.au stable. He is the . first of the horses bought at the sale to win. He is just the sort'that might win good sprint races next season. _ < The Wanganui Hurdle Ra.ce winner, Rio, was considered good for the Carterton Hack Handicap, but he never showed up nearer than second. He would probably have done better had he been allowed to run along '; in front. Ethopian (AU Black—Esmeh) j reached the winning post only in time to stall off a late run by Rienzi, who was ( the least fancied.

Probably because she drew inside position Wonder was best backed for the Telegraph Handicap. She led Trentham Rose for four furlongs, where Lady Black got an opening on the rails that probably won her the race. Daytime finished on well, and got within half a length of the winner. Lady Black, although still owned in the Wairarapa, is now trained by R. Johnson, of Taranaki. Since going into his stable she has won twice 6ut of as many starts. The Awapuni winner, March On, was considered the best of those in the Taratahi Hack Welter, but she was beaten by Some Girl (Gazeley—Lady Reay), who won from end to end. Her dam is a full sister to Melwood, who ran second in a New Zealand GPup, and she is evidently on the improve'. Sir Agnes, who had run unplaced in the Cup, was brought out again in the Welter, and scored in This best style. He won the same race three years ago with the same pilot (0. Price) aboard. He is a great welter horse, and was once a fancied Winter Cup candidate. He won at the Wellington winter meeting three years in succession. Honeybee (Hymettus—By By)_ won the Electric Hack Handicap, and paid a good price, considering that the best he had to beat was Prince Pormby. who had run third in the Trial Plate .earlier in the day.
