CASTAWAYS ON FLINT ISLAND.
(By Cable.) SAN FRANCISCO, May 17 (Delayed). Captain Eidswag, of the barquenfcine Alfa, from Melbourne, reports a South Sea 'mystery. He discovered unknown castaways on Flint Island, in the Polynesian group, whither he had been blown by storms. 'He made a futile attempt at rescue, and in trying to reach the marooned people in a lifeboat, which capsized in the swift tides among treacherous reefs, he was forced to sail away. Two days later the attention of the Alfa's crew was attracted by fires on the island, whereon several persons were discernible. - Flint Island is far out of the trade routes. STEAMER TO BE DESPATCHED. AUCKLAND, May 31. The Minister of Marine (Hon. T. M. Wilford) has sent a wireless message to the Administrator at Samoa for a steamer to visit Flint Island to investigate the report of castaways reported there. The island ie leased to Lever Bros, for 99 years as a plantation concern.
