MAYORAL INSTALLATIONS.
DUNEDIN. A . simple but impressive ceremony marked the installation of Mr William Begg as Mayor of the city of Dunedin. The function "took place at noon on the 7thin the Town Hall and in addition to a full attendance of councillors and their wives there was a large gathering of representative citizens* including Messrs R. S. Black and R. Gilkison, two of Mr Begg's opponents in the recent contest; Messrs G. L. Denniston, G. Lawrence, J. Loudon, and 0. R. Chapman (ex-Mayors); and a number of ladies. The Council Chamber was redeemed from its customary formal appearance by nicely-arranged vasea of chrysanthemums and maiden-hair fern. The proceedings were brief, occupying only a little over half an hour. The retiring Mayor (Mr J. J. Clark) presided, and the following councillors were present: Crs Larnach, Bradley, Green, Douglas, Hayward, Shaddock, Wilson, Hancock, Jeffery Walker, Thompson, M'Donald, Taverner and Thorn. The retiring Mayor (Mr Clark) gave a valedictory address in -which he briefly referred to some of the chief events connected with his term of office. He thought Dunedin was fortunate in having so many devoted workers in social work, and made special reference to the Women's Patriotic Association, headed by Miss Dowme Stewart. . In concluding he felicitated Mr Begg on his election. Mr W. Begg, mayor elect, then made the prescribed statutory declaration, and having been invested with the robes of office and mayoral chair, was congratulated by Crs Shaddock and M'Donald. Mr Begg. in replying, paid a warm tribute to" his predecessor, and to the manner in which ho had carried out his duties. He looked with confidence to the future, and concluded by saying that if the city continued to be clean, healthy, and wholesome, the labours of councillors would not be in On the motion of the Mayor a vote of thanks was nassed to the retiring may«r. to be recorded in the minutes, and an engrossed copy sent to Mr Clark. OTAGO DISTRICTS. Mr A. D. Edgar was installed as Mayor of St" Kilda. and received the congratulations of councillors and his two opponents in the contest. . Cr Jas. L. Miller, who was elected unopposed as Mayor of Green Island, was installed, and received the congratulations of old and new councillors. Mr J. M. Stevenson was installed as" Mayor of Port Chalmers, and promised in reply to congratulations to "boost" along the borough of Port Chalmers.*
