The stock market continues in a parlous etate. This week's sale at the Waiareka yards was the poorest recorded for many years, but the Duntroon sale on the following day was a little better for sheep. The bright spot in the stock market was discovered at a clearing sale on Thursday at Windsor, when throe-shear ewes brought 26s 3d, three-ebear halfbrod owes 22a 9d, and two-tooth owes 40s 6d, and mixed-age ewes 28s. Sales by private treaty have been few. A line of six and eight-tooth owes changed hands at 255; six and eight-tooth ewes in backward condition 12s 6d, and halfbrod etore hill lambs 12s Gd. A few fat cattle have been dealt in at the following prices:—Pat bullocks, £l6; fat steers, £l2; fat cows, £8 to £9; fat heifers ,£7; vea.lers, £2 to £3; calves, from 10s to 2Ss. SOUTHLAND MARKETS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) INVERCARGILL, May 10. During the past week several stock sales have been held in the country, and until yesterday at O'.autau tnings remained practically the same as for the last fortnight. At Otautau, however, the sales showed a marked improvement, there being a rise of about 2s per head on most classes. Harvesting operations are pretty well over, thus allowing formors to attend the sales. There was a fair inquiry for good forward lambs and for conditioned wethers. Prices may be quoted: Fat Cattle.—Prime ox beef, 435; heifer, 41s; cow, 38s; extra prime bullocks, £lB to £2l 10s; prime, £ls 10s to £l7; light and unfinished down to £ll 10s; extra prime cows, £l3 to £11; prime, £lO to £11; unfinished down to £8 10a; prime heifers, £ll to £l2 10s; medium, £9 10s to £lO 10s; light and unfinished, down to £B. ADDINGTON STOCK MARKET. CHRISTCHURCH, May 7. At the Addington market there was a very large entry of fat sheep, and more cattle were offered, but the yardmgs m other departments were genera ly smaller than those of the previous week. There was rather a better tone in the store sheep market, and wethers especially sold better Fat lambs were a little firmer, but fat cattle, which were mostly of medium qual ity were much easier, though anything really prime sold well up to late rates. The fat sheep market opened at about the previous week's prices, but soon eased off, and became irregular, and towards the end a number of lots were passed in. Prices were down from Is to 2s per head, and in some cases more. There was a poor sale for store cattle, and vealers were down in consequence of a heavy supply of the cheaper beef on th© market. Fat pigs sole) well, but stores were slow of sale. Pigs.—A large entry of fat pigs were penned, and a small offering of stores and suckers! Baconers were lower by 5s to 7s 6d as compared with last week's values, but porkers met a brisk sale. TRUSTEES, EXECUTORS, AND AGENCY COMPANY. The thirty-seventh annual report states that the profit and loss account shows a net profit for the year of. £2168 18s lOd, to which has to be added the balance of £5187 18s 5d from last year, making a total at credit of £7356 17s 3d. An interim dividend of 10. .per cent....pei. annum for the half-year ended September 30 was paid, amounting to £SOO, leaving a balance to be dealt with of £sßs6 17s 3d. Of this balance the directors recommend the following appropriation, to be made:—To dividend of 5 per cent., making 10 per cent, "for the year, £500; to bonus at 5' per cent, on' £IO,OOO, £500; to be written off office furniture and stationery, £80; balance 'to be" carried forward (less late manager's commission on net profits), £5776 17s 3d. The retiring directors are Messrs Alexander Bathgate and John Roberts, C.M.G., who offer themselves for re-election. The directors place on record their high appreciation of the services rendered to the company by Mr William, Laurence Simpson, who retired on December 31 from the position .of manager after continuous and faithful service since the inoejjtion of the company in 1881. The' directors recommend that these services be recognised by a 'substantial retiring allowance, which shareholders will be asked to grant. NEW ZEALAND PAPER MILLS. The a-.nual report of the New Zealand Paper Mills states that, after making provision for all bad and doubtful debts, for depreciation on plant and machinery, for income and war taxes, and deducting the interim dividend of £3317 2s 6d paid on 6th November, there is left available £14,475 lis Ed. The directors recommend that this be dealt with as follows-.—Payment of dividend at the rate of 4 per cent, for the half-year (making 7J' per cent, for the year), £3791; payment of a bonus at the rate of 6d per share, £2368. 7.5. 6d; add to reserve fund, £5000; carry forward, £3315 3s lid;—total, £14,475 lis sd. In spite of the continued abnormal conditions caused by the war, trade has been steady during the year, although in common with all other industries some dislocation resulted from the epidemic in November. The difficulty of procuring sufficient supplies of raw material is giving the directors some concern, but the outlook for the future in this direction is much brighter. THE A.M.P. SOCIETY. We have received a copy of the seventieth -annual report of the Australian Mutual Provident Society. It shows that the new business in the ordinary department in 1018 comprised 22,458 policies assuring £7,981,170, and 46 annuities for a total of £2643 Os 4dl per annum. In the industrial department 34,092 new policies were issued assuring £1,597,252 5s Od. The new business in each department was a record for the society. Claims by death in the ordinary department amounted to £2,074,607 6s 4d, including £459,161 12s 8d for bonus additions. Death claims due to the war (included in the foregoing total) amounted- to £767,146 17s 9d Endowment and endowment assurance policies amounting to £817,920 4s lOd, including £208,851 9s 5d for bonus additions, have matured. The void business from other causes comprised 5687 ' policies assuring £1,618,699 9s lid, and annuities of £5411 3s 4d. The accumulated fund, including the amoxmt at credit of the industrial department, has been increased by £1,548,750 0s 6d, and now amounts to £39,190,281 2a 6d, whioJi includes a sum of £28,540 lis 2d in tho. claims investment account. In addition to this there is'an amount of £63,922 7s lOd at credit of the investment fluctuation fund, making a total of £39,203 10s 4d. The actuary's report discloses a cash surplus of funds over liabilities of £1,197,931 7s 9d in the ordinary department, and of £33,284 17s lOd in th« industrial department. Out of these surpluses the board resolved to allot for distribution among tho members tho cum of £1,005,931 7s 9d in the ordinary department and £33,284 17a lOd in the indxistrial department. These sums will provide reversionary bonuses of about £1,700,000 and £47,000 respectively, which aro materially In excess of those allotted' laat year.
