SOLDIERS' CLUB BUILDING. CHRISTOHURCH, May 10. A deputation from the Returned Soldiers' Association, the- Lady Liverpool Fund Committee, and other bodies waited on the Hon. G. W. Russell thia morning to press their claim that the sum of £3003 voted by the Lady Liverpool Fund Committee to the Soldiers' Club Building- Fund should 'be validated by the Minister. In introducing the deputation, the Mayor said that thS Minister was asked to find a way out of the red tape that prevented paying over tho grant. The deputation asked that immediate sanction be given to tho transfer, and that if necessary statutory authority be given later for the transfer. A number of other prominent citizens spoke in favour of the transfer being authorised. Replying, the Minister said the strongest point raised was that the club would provide accommodation for medically unfit men, who wanted something in the nature of a home, but the legal position had to be observed. The matter was one for Parliament to settle. He would consult the Gx-vy ernment as to whether amending legislation should be brought down to provide that such funds might be used, not only ior establishing clubs, but also for maintaining them.
