THE FREEZING INDUSTRY.
EXTREME SHORTAGE, OF SLAUGHTERMEN. (Fhom Oub Own Cokkespondent.)
WELLINGTON, May 7. In the freezing industry throughout New. Zealand at present there is an extreme shortage of slaughtermen. Various companies have advertised in all the centres for men, but they are still wprking shorthanded, with little prospect of relief. Many reasons are given for the short-age. In the first place, a large number of competent slaughtermen have left New Zealand during the last four years; again, -new works have opened up, and the supply of labour has not been eijual to the demand. The number of men who came to JNew Zealand this year was small—very small compared with the number which went to and fro, say, four years ago. As it is, tno Australians who have crossed the lasman did so under special engagement, and it; might be added on very satisfactory terms to themselves. However, in seeking reasons for the shortage, the lateness of the season in the North Island must not be overlooked. The position is that North Island and bouth Island sheds are now working together. X« is unusual that at this time of the year North Island companies should be calling out for men.
