SOUTH ISLAND DAIRY ASSOCIATION.

THE ANNUAL REPORT.

The annual report of the South Island Dairy Association of New Zealand for the year ended April 30, to bo presented to the general meeting of members to be held on June 4, oontuins the following clauses: Your executive have pleasure in, placing before members the annual report and balanco sheet for the year ended April 30, 1919, together with the customary statistics, containing information relative to the progress and production of the industry during the past year. It is with pleasure and extreme gratitude that we extend greetings on the successful conclusion of the war, instead of the cloud of gloom and foreboding that overcast our outlook at the last annual meeting. Your executive have regretfully to record the death of its late chairman (Mr Thomas William Foster], its most valued member. The industry benefited by his activities in any movement having for its object the general good of the association. A man of fine physique, broad-minded, and happy disposition. It is recognised he was the most capable chairman that ever controlled the affairs of the association. He was elected to a seat on the association on June 4, 1913, and to president on May 19, 1915. This official position involved him in duties of the greatest responsibility and importance, more particularly in the war-time period, and these duties he performed as a faithful, honourable, upright, and just man. The large quantities of produce in the stores at the end of last season was a cause of grave anxiety, not only from the point of view of the want of transport accommodation, but from the need of additional cool storage. It became necessary to take immediate steps to provide still further for the requirements. The concessions received this year through business placed through the association amounts to £253 19s Bd, an increase of £42 9s Id over last year's figures. Your executive desires to thank those factories that have placed their insurance with us. The profit and loss account is in credit to the extent of £5647 9s lid, an increase of £2403 4s on the year's working, which indicates a financial success on the year's operations. The turnover for supplies for use of factories was £51,556 16s Bd, an increase of £14,680 12s 7d for the year. This must be considered as very satisfactory, considering the difficulties to contend with in obtaining deliveries. The sale of local butter and cheese was £BB7O 2s 6d, making the total turnover £60,426 19s 2d. It is gratifying for your executive to report that the business done by the association is steadily developing. The support given by members last year was encouraging, and the orders received for indents for this year in all lines indicate substantial increases. For the loyalty accorded and confidence placed in the association by members we desire to express our cordial appreciation, and we can assure our customers that no efforts will be spared to consider their interests for the coming year. The membership of the association at the end of the financial year, April 30, was 110. The application for the registration of new factories in the South Island is as follows:—Butter factories—Canterbury, 1; oheese factories—Otago, 1. The negotiations which took place between representatives from the North and South Island producers have already been communicated to members. Although there were many difficulties to overcome before final settlement was arrived at, the representatives are to be congratulated on the issue thus far.

After mature consideration by your executive on the matter of the Southland agent, as suggested by Southland producers, grrangements were finally made with the luff Harbour Board to undertake the work. The retiring directors are Mr .H. J. Middleton (Waimahaka) and Mr James Lumsden (Drummond). There is also a vacancy caused by the death of Mr Thomas Foster (Oware). Mr H. J. Middleton is eligible for re-election, but Mr James Lumsden has notified us that he does not intend to seek re-election. Mr James Lumsden has been a most valued member .of the executive since June, 1910, and has at all times used his best endeavours to forward the interests of the industry. It was with regret that his co-directors learnt that owing to future prospects, it would be impossible for him to continue on the directorate. The following have been nominated for the position of director:—Eastern districtMessrs H. J. Middleton (Waimahaka), G. Crosbie (Glenham), R. Arnott (Wyndham), Hugh Smith (Whiterig); Western districtMessrs T. A. Buckingham (Drummond), J. H. M'Konzie (Awarua), John M'Naughton (Aparima), R. M. Hewitt (Woodlands).
