OTAGO CHESS CLUB
The thirty-fourth season of the Otago Chess Club was opened on the 12th in their rooms in the Y.M.C.A. Buildings, when there was an extra large attendance of members.
Mr H. H. Henderson (president), after introducing his Worship the Mayor (Mr W. Begg), said the committee was_ holding a championship tournament in Winter Show week, which, he felt sure, would be a success, but to attain that end it would be necessary for all the members to enter. The club was not strong, but it was in a prosperous condition, and he hoped that the members would help to make it more so by not only entering for the tournament, but attending regularly on the club evenings. The Mayor, who was received with hearty applause, then the following orizes: —Junior Championship, Rev. N. Fr;berg; Handicap Tournament, Mr P. N. Stewart (now in- Auckland), 1: Mr W. H. Allen, 2. His Worship then formally opened the club for the season. He had no doubt that chess , was an interesting and entertaining game. The Otago Chess Club was doing good work, not only for the game but socially, apart from chess. Aiteg a few more remarks, his Worship moved Fo K 4, and declared the season open.—(A#» plause.) A heartv vote of thanks by acclamation was accorded to his Worship for his attendance.

The entries for the Winter Chess Tournament, to be held during the Winter Show week, are cominjr in in a satisfactory manner. In the senior class two ex-New Zealand champions—Messrs R. A. Cleland and J. Edwards, —as well as several strong players, have entered. Keen interest will also be taken in the Junior Championship, which is attracting players from other centres, one entry having been received from as far away as Cheviot.
