THE SHIPPING PROBLEM.

(By Cable.) LONDON, May 1. Six large meat-carriers are being built on the Tyne for the Federal-Shire, Shaw, Savill, and Albion, and Commonwealth and Dominion Lines. Hawthorn, Leslie have nearly completed the Port Nicholson for the Commonwealth and Dominion Line. The vessel is 500 ft long, of 12,722 tons dead weight. Swan, Hunter, and Co. are building two steamers for the FederalShire Line. The Palmer Company _is building a third vessel, two having already been launched. Armstrong ? Whitworths, and Palmer are each building one vessel for the Shaw, Savill, and Albion Line. The last five steamers mentioned will be 450 ft long, to carry 3200 tons of meat each. May 7. In the House of Commons Colonel Wilson (Parliamentary Secretary to the Shipping Controller) stated that all German passenger steamers handed to Britain, numbering 23.. had been allocated to service with Australasia and South Africa. Twenty-one had been allotted to Australasia, being for the repatriation of troops and the transport of available cargo. It is expected that a number of American ships now engaged in carrying food will be assigned shortly to ordinary commercial services.
