THE FOOD SHORTAGE.
(By Cable.) LONDON, April 29. The Food Controller states that, excluding Germany and Bulgaria, nearly 12,000 tons of foodstuffs daily have been delivered in Europe during March in order to avert starvation ; also that thousands of tons of food have been delivered in Germany since the relief arrangements were completed. During April 100,000 tons will have been sent to Germany. Plans are being formulated to feed over a million children in the liberated areas of Central Eastern Europe. Furthermore, we are largely helping to feed France, Italy, Belgium, Greece, Switzerland, and Portugal. In the House of Commons Mr Roberts, Food Minister, announced that' the increased cost of food over that in July, 1914, for a workman's family was 94 per cent, by April, 1917, 106 per cent, by November, 1917, 133 per cent, by November, 1918, and 113 per cent, by April, 1919. Dr Addison, President of the Local Government Board, said the local authorities were considering 998 housing schemes, embodying the construction of 140,000 houses. May 6. The British Food Controller has reduced the" retail price of imported meat by 2d per lb.
