PUBLIC HEALTH RETURNS.
SCARLET FEVER AND DIPHTHERIA PREVALENT. The public health, returns for April for the various hospital districts in the south are as follow: —
Waitaki. —Scarlet fever, 5 cases; diphtheria, 23; tuberculosis, 5; influenza, 4. Otago District. —Scarlet fever, 21; diphtheria, 52; tuberculosis, 12; influenza, 7; cerebro-spinal meningitis, 1; erysipelas, 1.
Vincent. —Scarlet fever, 1; influenza, 2. Maniototo. —Scarlet fever, 1; tuberculosis, 1. Southland. —Scarlet fever, 8; diphtheria, 12; tuberculosis, 4; ■ influenza, 2. Wallace. —Diphtheria, 1. The total number of cases is 213, and of these 86 are scarlet fever, 88 diphtheria, 22 tuberculosis, and 15 influenza. For the month of March the figures were:—Scarlet fever, 39; diphtheria, 63; tuberculosis, 16; influenza, 4 There has therefore been an increase in scarlet fever cases during April of 47, of diohtheria 25, of tuberculosis 6, and of influenza 11. The other differences are very smalL/ The greatest difference is in the Otago Hospital district, the material increases being in scarlet fever and diphtheria.
