DRAUGHTS.

CONDUCTED BY JOS. ABEENETHY

Solutions oJ problems, gamos, and analyses invited ior this column. Games should bo written In six columns as below, and all correspondence addressed to the Draughts Editor. n

PROBLEM 4460. By R. Bgsh, in "Horsfall's Problem Book." Black.

White.

White to play and win.

TO CORRESPONDENTS. A. 8., Timaru.—Thanks for note of club’s resolution. J. P., Wanganui.—-Sorry you have not been so well. Thanks for address. Your solution of Problem 4450 is correct; but in Problem 4453 at your 4th move, instead of 15 11, 14 9 wins for White. W. M‘o., Timaru.—The heading suggested would be too cumbersome and unnecessary. The greater title necessarily includes the lesser. Will let you know about the games. A. S., Waimate.—Thanks for play. GAMES. The following games were played in a tournament for the championship of the Otago Club: Game 8727—" Edinburgh.”

(a) The general opinion seems to be in favour of 11 15 or 5 9 as best for Black here. (b) This leads to a scattering of White’s forces andi consequent -weakness; 25 22 looks healthier. Game 3728 —“Edinburgh.”

(a) There seems to be no hope after Ibis, but 11 15 is quite safe. The following games were played by Mr T. G-. Richards (Queensland) during a visit to Melbourne on holiday. Score and notes from the Melbourne Herald; Game 8729—“ Dundee.” Black: Richards. White: Clark.

(a) 9 13 is the strongest play as this stage. In the “Second American Tourney Boole,” page 54, Game 90, Harry Lieberroan remarks that “16 30, 9 14, and 9 13 all give Black a commanding game.” Regarding 9 14, however, this assertion cannot be accepted, as 34 19 in reply extracts any “sting” which 9 14 may possess.—See “Shearer’s Handbook,” Section 1, page 110, Var. 8. (b) 34 15 is considered preferable at this point. (c) 9 14 at once is a good line. (d) A neat little touch which, metaphorically, takes all the “wind out of Black’s sails.” (e) A nicely contested game. Game 3730—“ Dundee.” Black: H. Egan. White; Richards.

(a) As in not© (a) to preceding' game, 24 15 is also the host “tali©” hero. “Eear’s Encyclopaedia” has a faulty Black win against the text, thus;

(b) 11. Fraser v. K. Jordan continued with 19 16 and lost, (c) Wins for White and corrects tire Encyclopedia, Yol. 1, page 22, note (h), where 23 18 is given, allowing a draw. The lest makes the game the same as in the 1907 “English Tourney Book,” page 8, Yar. .3. In lieu of 30 26, 30 25 also seems good enough to win. (b) White’s safest play. (c) Switches off from the Jordan v. Fraser game. (d) White continues with 26 22 to draw. The newcomer should note that bringing the king out by 2 6 would lose by 27 31, °6 13 31 22, etc. ■ NOTES AND CRITICISMS. Mr A. Shepherd, Waimato, writes on Game 3721 as follows:—After 29th move in this game the position is: Black on 1,2, 5, 7 9, 12, 16, 20; White on 11, 18, 21, 23, 21. ’25,’ 26, 27. White to play. 26 22 should draw hero as in “Lees’ Guide”; but 25 22 was played, in the game, and it loses by—--2 6 c c cm n 25 m Vo m 21 17-a 13 13 11 2 26 22 2 7 27 23 9 13 1 6 10 13 1C 19 25 30 30 25 21 19 15 11 13 il 23 16 7 .10 ‘23 18 Then 25 21, Black wins.
