HPDRO-ELECTRIC SCHEME.

PROGRESS IN THE NORTH ISLAND. AUCKLAND, April 30. Referring to hydro electric HChemes today Sir William Eraser said that the work of sinking experimental shafts on either eido of the gorge In connection with the harnessing of the Waikato River was now in progress. Provided the test proved tho dam would bo proceeded with. It was estimated that the plant with a capacity of 162,000 horse power could ultimately bo installed at this station. To fulfil its funotion in the general soheme proposed by Mr Parry, a plant capacity of 96,000 horse power was - required. The work was also progressing in connection with the Mangahao scheme, near Palmerston North, which was considered capable of developing 24,(M) horso power, and which would be tha other main North Island generating station. Sir William Fraser added that there was no intention of proceeding with the Lake Waikaremoana soheme for some time. The cost of completing the Waikato and Mangahao schemes was estimated at between fiva and six million pounds.
