The Avondale Jockey Club's autumn meeting was held on April 26 and 30 in glorious weather, the attendance each day being a record. There was plenty of money available? the sum of £83,784- passing through the machine. The principal event on the opening day went to the Australian-bred filly Taiamai, who was in front all the way, winning by half' a length from Bedford in the fast time of 2.6 1-5. Taiamai has been a good stake-earner this season, with seven wins and a second out of 10 starts. Gazique was backed down to a very short price on the opening day, but spoilt his chance by running wide at the Rome turn. He made amends on the second day by capturing the leading event. All Talk is running with bad luck, filling third position in his last three starts. The two-year-old events went to the southerners, Stammer winning on the opening day and Rose • Queen the second day. Rose Queen finished well each day, and should turn out a good three-year-old. . Tirau made a one-horse race of - the Steeplechase on the opening day,'jumping beautifully. throughout. He never let the field near him, but on the second day he fell at the first fence, which was a facer for his army of supporters, but just another instance of the "glorious uncertainty. Corregidor ran well at the meeting, with two wins and a second out of three starts. Old Spalperion scored in the Steelechase on the second day, though ho was greatly assisted by the. rest of the field falling Waiuta, who has not been running with the best of luck lately, won the Welter the first day, and looked like' winning the leading event on the second day, but Gazique got up in time to beat her on the Post. . . ~ Cynic made a fair showing on the opening day, when he ran second to Monopole but on the second day the third obstacle brought him to grief. With a little more experience he should pay his way over sticks. . . Ditto had no difficulty in winning the Hurdles on the second day with 11.13 mtho saddle. Being a perfect jumper, she is a good proposition in any hurdle event up to two miles. . . , Crowhurst scored an easy Win in the Railway. He is proving a profitable investment for his -new owner. Hvllus filled second position on two occasions at Avondale. He should be at his best at the winter meetings and a race extending to 10 furlongs should not be beyond him. ... ,-, t- x. Kauri King is thriving on the racing he is getting, and will be in great heart for hurdle events ahead. ,' ' ■ • Admiral Advance should soon show an improvement on the second he ran at Avondale. __. - Bitholia, who was recently purchased by an Auckland sportsman, showed great promise at Ellerslie last Christmas, but has not done well in the meantime. However, he may do better next season. _ Jack Delaval, who raced with considerable success in Auckland, broke his leg last week while running in a paddock on his owner's farm. During his racing career he won over £6OOO in stakes, including four £IOOO races at Ellersho, a feat that has yet to be equalled. HACINO IN NEW ZEALAND. WELLINGTON RACES. First Day—Titubsday, May 1.
