OTAGO A. AND P. SOCIETY
The monthly meeting of the committee of i the Otago Agricultural and Pastoral Society was held on the 24th, and was attended by Messrs R. A. S. Cantrell (president, in the chair), G. H. Mac Ewan, H. Price, J. Ross, J. MacandreW, J. A. Roberts, J. Nimmo, i T. Scott, J. F. Herbert, T. T. Ritchie, i R. A. Ewing, J. Loudon, E. F. Duthie, and W. R. Gawn. T!ho President referred to the death of Mr G. Gray Russell, who was president in 1886, and latterly a governor of the society, and to the death of Mr G. H. Gilroy, who had for many years been a member of the committee, and latterly hon. lifo member. He moved that letters of sympathy be sent to the relatives of the deceased gentlemen.—Carried. audited balance sheet for tho year ended March 31 was submitted, and on the motion of Mr E. F. Dufchie, seconded by Mr J. Loudon, it was resolved that the report and balance sheet be printed and circulated amongst members. i Accounts amounting to £240 12s 6d were passed for payment. I Mr R. A. Ewing wrote stating that he proposed visiting America shortly, and asked for leave of absence. On the motion of Mr Duthie, seconded by Mr Herbert, leave of absence was granted, end it wao resolved that a letter from the society to kindred associations in America be handed to him. The secretary of the Teviot Fruit Growers' Association wrote offering assistance towards obtaining entries for the Winter Show. —Received with thanks. Mr T. E. Besley • (Albury) wrote returnI ing ohequo for judge's expenses, and wishing the society every success.—Received, Mr Besley to bo thanked for his donation. The Director of the Horticultural Division of tho Department of Agriculture wrote - kagreeing_ to the services • of his staff being utilised in judging at the Winter Show.— Received with satisfaction. The Director of the Dairy Division also
intimated that his staff would be pleased to render their services as judges. —Received with satisfaction.
A considerable amount of detail business in connection with the Winter Show was considered.
Judges in various sections at the Winter Show were nominated. According to the rules of the society, the following members of committee retire this year, but are eligible for re-election at the annual meeting:—Dunedin—Messrs G. Black, G. R. Ritchie, and W. Turnbull; D. Andrew and W. R. Gawn; Waihemo, Mr James Ross; Bruce and Clutha—Messrs H. M. Driver and James Smith; Central Otago, Mr W. M. Wilson.
For_ the position of president for the incoming year Mr W. Gardiner, jun., Papawas nominated, and Messrs James Smith and James Ross were nominated as hon. life members of the society. The following new members were elected: —Messrs David Taylor (Dunedin), S. E. Brent (Dunedin), R. R. G. Rattray (Dunedin), F. Barnett (South Dunedin), Riach and M'Lennan (Dunedin), William Twaddle (Balclutha), and F. G. Murphy (Heriot).
