TAIERI COUNTY COUNCIL

The monthly meting of the Taieri County Council, held on the 24th, was presided over by Cr W. H. L. Christie. The Sanitary Inspector reported that the slaughter houses in the county were in good order.—Received.

The ranger reported that the roads were fairly clear of stray stock. He had impounded 14 head of cattle and two horses during the month. —Received. The Finance Committee reported that the accounts for the month totalled £1368 17s 6J, and the receipts £7056 15s lOd. The bank book showed a credit balance of £1279 7s 4d.—Received.

The Minister of Public Works, and Messrs R, Scott and J. M. Dickson, M.P.'s, vrote concerning grants for the BrightonTaieri Mouth road, and protective works at Cottesbrook bridge, Middlemarch. Instuctions had been given to obtain reports thereon.—Received.

The Town Clerk, Outran), requested that attention bo given to ditches on the main county road leading through the township. Left in the hands of the engineer. Mrs A. Christie and Mrs L. B. Stevens, Alianton, applied for some improvement to the entrances to their residences, as in past winters access to them was almost impossible.—Left with the engineer with power to act. Mr Duncan M'lntosh applied for the second time for repairs to the road from Mr Jones's to his farm; and asked to have the road grade reduced on the hill leading to his mother's place. He also protested against the present system of rating for road maintenance, as-side roads were neglected. —It was resolved to put the surfaceman on for a day or two to dress up the road.

An application from 16 ratepayers for the lighting of' Thames and Severn streets, Mossburn, at their junction with Renton read, was referred to Cr Findlay for a report. The Brighton Coal Company asked for improvements to the roid from the dairy factory to the tea rooms —a distance of about a mile. The company would cart the metal, and lend any further assistance in reason. —The chairman, Cr Scott, and the engineer to inspect and report to nextmeeting. After hearing a report by the clerk, the ccuncil decided io increase ihe Middlemarch sanitary fees to Is 3d per service. Cr Kempshell reported on inquiries lie had made about gravel in Mr John Thomson's property at Maimgatua. —The council xcsolved that the engineer ascertain the depth of the gravel deposit. Tho executive of theOtigo Motor Club wrote asking the council to be represented '.at a conference in Dunedin on May 14, to |||scu» Mr Couston's report on the laying iftwv'n and repairing of roads.—The Council JSlleed that the chairman and cleric should 'Attend. •
