MAINTENANCE OF SOLDIERS' DEPENDENTS.
AN AUCKLAND PROTEST. AUCKLAND, April 2<k On the subject oftretrospective allowances in respect of the maintenance of wives and children of soldiers on active service, the annual report of the Auckland Returned Soldiers' Association says: "The Government refused to admit our claim, in spite of the fact that the people of New Zealand are solidly behind the returned men in their demand for full retrospective allowances. Confident in the justice of our claim, wo mean to carry it to a successful conclusion." A scathing criticism of the Government in regard to the repatriation of soldiers is contained in the annual report of the Auckland Returned Soldiers' Association submitted at the annual general meeting held to-night. The report strongly condemns the setting up of a Ministerial board in connection with repatriation. It states that a Minister of Repatriation should have been appointed, as divided control had never yet proved effective. It also condemns the Government for what it terms its criminal delay in setting up the department.
