; AUCKLAND, April 15. : Thomas John Knudson, a Norwegian, 1 was charged in the Police Court with having placed himself in a ( position to solicit alms in Victoria street.' i The evidence for the prosecution showed ! that the accused, who, judging by an empty sleeve, had only one arm, was noticed to solicit money and cigarettes from sevei ral passers-by. He used as a plea the state- | ment that ho had had his arm shot off in [ France, was suffering from shell-shock, and had just returned from the front. His atti- ! tude, however, aroused the suspicions of the ?' olice, and he was subsequently arrested, t then found that his "missing" arm I was strapped down his side. Several preI vious convictions had been entered against him. The accused, who pleaded guilty, wafl | sentenced to three months' imprisonment.
