WAIHEMO COUNTY COUNCIL
The monthly meeting of the Waihemo County Council was held on Thursday; present —Crs H. O'Neill (in the chair), T. H. Pilbrow, T. M'Lay, A. Aitcheson, Jas. O'Connell, and T. S. Miller. Mr G. 0. Matheson wrote stating that shingle was required on the road near Mr inspector was instructed to attend to the matter. Messrs Bickerton, Donoghan, and Gallery, proprietors of a prospecting claim of 100 acres situated east of the old Golden Bar mine, requested permission to work the reef where it crossed the Macraes-Stoneburn road. —Granted. The Secretary of the Otago Motor Club invited the council to send representatives to the conference to be held in Dunedin on May 14-, to discuss Mr B. B. Couston's report on the roads of New Zealand. —The chairman and the inspector were appointed. The balance sheet, which was laid on the table, showed that the revenue for the year amounted to £2013 16s Id. Transfers to the riding accounts amounted to £1217 Os lid, and other expenditure to £796 15s 2d. Mr who was untiring _in his work during the influenza epidemic, was nominated as the council's organiser in the event of a recrudescence of, the plague. The Inspector reported that the motor bridge at Muddy Creek, in the Bushey Riding, required to bo widened, and an approach of railing at each end would bo vrry useful in facilitating the passage of sheep. Tho Grange bridge, in the Dunback Riding, needed improving, as there was a nasty drop from the road level to it. He was sorry to receive the resignation of Mr Cushnan, who had done very satisfactory work as surfaceman for Macraes Riding. Regarding the suggestion to erectf" bridges at the Terra co Farm crossing l and Jones's crossing, in the Blue Mountain Riding, the inspector reported that the sito was not at all suitable, being unsafe owing to the nature of the ground and the uncertainty a-s to whether the river would maintain its present course. The cost of the two bridges he estimated at not less than £llOO. —In this connection a letter was received from Mrs Flora Coutts enumerating the claims she would make in tho event of tho council laying a road over the southern side of her property.—lfc was resolved that in face of the inspector's report the council did not consider it advisable to go on with the project. Cr O'Neill and the members for the district were appointed to interview the ratepayers _ and property owners concerned, to see if they could obtain the right by leaso to tho use of a road through private property during times when the river was not fordable. The inspector was authorised to go on with the other works mentioned in his report.—The surfaceman's resignation was accepted.
