QUARTERLY SCHOOL RETURNS. The quarterly attendance returns for the period ended March 31, 1019. compiled by the Otasro Education Board, show that there were 257 schools in operation in the district. The avera-sre weekly number of -pupils on the roll during 1 the quarter was 22.053, comprising 11,395 boys and 10.658 girls. The average attendance was 10,737 boys and 10.032 pirls, making a total of 20.769. or 278 more than the previous quarter and 357 more than for the March quarter, 1918. The averages for the district high schools were: —Port Chalmers, 478: Balclntha, 439; Mosgiel 380 : Palmcrston, 262 : Tolromairiro, 257 j Alexandra, 186; Tapanui. 172; Lawrence, 158.
