HERBERT.

- April 12.—The weather has been fairly good of late. The mornings are getting cold and frosty, and we have had a few good showersj which will help along the turifips. The cheese factory closed down on March 31 owing to the short supply of milk.. ■•

Concert.—On Thursday evening, April 10, Mr D. H. Thomeon's concert party journeyed from Oama.ru to give a concert in aid of the Welcome-home Funds. The weather was perfect, and the hall was packed to overflowing. Mr Kitchen was. chairman, and before introducing the party said he was pleased to sec a full house, because the object was to raise funds to givo our, soldier boys a real welcome home, and also to present-each with a gold medal. Ho said our boys had shown their valour at the front, four Military Medals having come to the district, and it was now our turn to show them in no niggardly fashion that we "as a people appreciated.their efforts. An. excellent and most enjoyable concert was then proceeded with, every item being encored. The concert party gave several selections, and solos were rendered by the iuisses Collett (2), "West. Macauley, Messrs Grenfell, A. Glass, and Thomson. Mr W. Smart gave an exhibition of step-dancing, and Mr Jackman gave selections on the bagpipes, besides playing for Mr Smart's dancing. The last item waa " M'Namara's Band," which greatly pleased the audience. Mr Alex. Forbes thanked the party for the very enjoyable programme, Mr Thomson briefly responding. The stage was tastefully decorated by-Mes-dames J. Reid, J. W. Stringer, Wilson, D. Morrison, and Miss Kirton, and the refreshments were attended to by Mesdames J. W. Stringer, W. Wilson, J. Hill, D. Morrison, R. J. Forbes, J. Reid, and Misses Munro and Kirton. During the interval flowers and sweets were sold by the girls. A dance followed, to music supplied by Messrs R. Stringer and A. M'Millan, while Messrs J. M'Millan and J. Budges made efficient M.C.'s. The concert was one of the best ever held here, the takings being over £2O. It may be mentioned that Mr Thomson's concert party has been instrumental in raising over '£2ooo for patriotic purposes.
