OAMARU MARKETS. (From Our Own Correspondent.)
OAMARU, April 5. The stock market has completely collapsed as the result of the absence of rain and the disappearance of feed. At this week's sale sheep of all descriptions showed a further drop in prices, even fat stock suffering. Two-tooth breeding ewes that a few weeks ago would have commanded over 80s were quitted at little over 20s, and so it was with other 'classes of breeding ewes and stores. Business by private treaty is practically at a standstill, and the only sale reported is one of rape lambs at 21s 6d. Very little attention is befog given to cattle, and young animals are practically unsaleable. A few transactions are reported as follows: —Store three-year-old bullocks, £10; two-year-old steers, £6 10s; mixed-sex yearlings, £3 ss; calves, 15s 'to 255. There are buyers of dairy cows coming to profit, which are scarce. Sales have been made of best cows just at profit at from £l2 to £l4, and of medium quality at from £9 to £lO, while heifers near calving have realised from £7 to £B.
„ SOUTHLAND MARKETS. (From Oijr Own Correspondent.)
\, INVERCARGLLL, April 5. stock market has not yet become any m/we active. Interest in sales seems to have fallen away a little of late, and numbers of pens are invariably passed in. Butchers are not operating in fat cattle, and the market is very" quiet. There is also no improvement in the store cattle market, bullocks being about the only line on offer. Fat sheep have been hard to dispose of during the week, and the store sheep market is practically unchanged. Prices may be quoted: Fat cattle —Prime fat bullocks, from £l7 to £18; medium, £ls 10s to £l6; prime fat cows, £l2 10s to £l3 10s; heifers, £7 to £ll 10s, according to quality. ADDINGTON STOCK MARKET. .CHRISTCHURCH, April- 2. There was a fairly large entry of stock at Addington to-day, fats showing an increase. Fat cattle were practically without change, but fat sheep and fat lambs again dropped in price from 2s to 8s per head, there being very little competition for export owing to space in the works getting scarce. Store sheep were easier by Is 6dl to 2s per head, the continued dry weather and scarcity of feed seriously affecting the position regarding stock, both for the immediate future and for the coming winter. Store cattle were dull of sale. Fat pigs sold well, hut baconers were not much in demand.
