WAIROA (Hawke's Bay).
April 2 The visit_ of the Hon. Mr WiKord lias again brought into prominence the old harbour question—Wairoa River v. Waikokopu. After his visit, to the latter the Minister expressed his astonishment at the possibilities of a harbour there — : a harbour not for Wairoa alone, but for the East Coast, and his suggestion is that the Government should resurvey the Napier-Wairoa-Gisborne railway, take it along the coast from Wairoa to Waikoliopu, and eo provide feeders for the harbour there. According to the Minister the Government -will not sanction the expenditure of any more money at the river mouth, especially as they claim that the former works were constructed contrary to their advice, especially in the matter of narrowing the entrance. It is doubtful how this advice will be received) by the district. The- town will oppose bitterly the proposal to abandon the river mouth, and the Marumaru and other inland districts will draw wry faces at the suggestion to change the railway route from Prasertown up the Wairoa River. And still there have always been numerous advocates of a route. up the Nuhaka River, so there may be some sense in that proposal. School Inspection.—-Inspector Strachan, of the Education Department, is at present on his annual visit of inspection to the schools of this district. He has already completed the Tiniroto portion, and the schools from Napier through to Wairoa, so that after the town schools he has the Waikareanoana road and the Nubaka-Morere-Hahia districts te> visit.
