OTAGO EXPANSION LEAGUE
The Executive Committee"of the Otago Expansion League met in the office on Wednesday evening. - Reports were handed in by the member* deputed to visit Balclutha and Beaumont, setting forth the keen interest evoked by the visits and the prospects of the. early, opening of branches in both localities, './ The secretary was instructed to write to the Minister of Publio Works asking for definite information regarding the rout* decided upon for the Balolutha-Tuapela Mouth railway, and the possibility 9! aft early commencement of its construction. It was resolved that communications pa addressed to the Postmaster-general and thf Minister of Publio Works requesting- th# early commencement of work in the building of the much-needed General Post Office. The question of the consolidation of publw offices was also brought forward, and It was resolved to urge strongly upon tb*. Government ihe absolute necessity of seeingr' the necessary land and buildings wherein tcf adequately house all branches of the publio fip.rvico. Members quoted a number of instances showing the waste of time and temper in seeking out in their various hid> ing places such offices as the stamp, land transfer, valuation, and many others. # 'The necessity of awakening the citizen* to the need of a progressive policy in regard to civic matters 'was brought forward, and it was arranged that steps .should- b» taken to arouse publio interest. This doef. not mean that the league is antagonistic to the City Council, but simply that it W desirous of seeing the . magnificent assets of the city developed to the highest possiw* point and full advantage taken of th», unique opportunity presented by the cloe* of the war to all'people anxious to realiw the high ideals which the new era is offei* ing to those who have the courago to adopt* them.'
