MONEY-LENDER'S CLAIM.

EXCESSIVE INTEREST CHARGED. INVERCARGILL-, April' 4.

The time of Mr G. Cruickshanks, S.M., was considerably taken up to-day in hearing actions taken by Lazarus Wolfe Balkind (money-lender), in which he sought to recover loans and interest from several of his Invoroargill clients. Some of the actions were defended on the ground that the rate of interest charged was excessive.

For the plaintiff Mr O'Bcirne submitted that a high rate of interest was necessary owing to the risk attached to the business. The evidence showed that in different cases £6 liad been charged on a loan of £25 for six months, £25 on a loan of £SO for 12 months, and £6 on a loan of £2O for six months.

In giving judgment for tho plaintiff in each oase his Worship considerably out down the interest claimed.
