OTAKOU SCHOOL PICNIC.

The Otakou (Maori Jlaik) School picmo was held laat Thursday at Otakou.- The weather was all that could bo desired. The programme consisted of games and races, which served to pass the timo most enjoyably. The latter were keenly contested, and the ' winners were awarded, prizes. Every ptipil received; a toy or suitable present, and all the children xinder school ago were handed a sniall gift. Mr Ellison, sen./ in the course of a few remarks in Maori (interpreted by Mrs Waisgott), mentioned that the Maori children were growing up unablo to speak their own language. This he lamented, and he considered that it would bo a good measure if provision were made on the school syllabus for the Maori language to be taught by a competent teacher in schools where a considerable number of Maoris attend.
