HYDRO-ELECTRIC ENERGY
DEPUTATION TO MINISTER OF WORKS. April 3. A deputation from the Hawke's Bay County Council waited upon the Minister of Public Works to-day, with reference to plans for utilising the water-power at Lake Waikare-Moana. They wished to offer the Government any assistance they could in connection with the scheme, with a view to an early start being made with it. Also, they were prepared to help with finances, and go on under the Act of last session if the Government would give the necessary permit. They would in that case work on Government plans. Sir Wm. Eraser, in replying, 6aid Wai-kare-Moana would link up with Mangahoa and Arapuni to provide power in case of necessity and also supply the East Coast districts. He saw no reason why, if a company were formed for working the WaikareMoana scheme, it should not be acceptable to the Government and Parliament. The scheme would have to be submitted for approval, and to provide for a bigger district than Hawke's Bay. Provision would hay© to be made, also, for the Government taking over the scheme under certain conditions.
Satisfaction was expressed with the Minister's reply, and it was said that -the deputation would call the local bodies together to form a board and put the scheme into operation.
