WELLINGTON NOTES.
(Fbou Oub Own Cobreßpondknt.) April 4
Mr H. Taylor has taken up his residence in Wellington. Ho has arranged for Matty and Spangle to be trained in future by J, Ayres at Trentham. A. M'Auley arrived from the south on Tuesday, and went on to Featherston, where he will train privately for Mr H. W \Brown at the Tauherenikau course In' addition to Mr Brown's team' he will have Kilrueh there. Mascot, Bo Beep, and Rebekah are being worked tho "wrong" way at Trentham with a view to competing at Ellerslie. H. leiford has also engaged Philomela and Active at' the Auckland meeting. He has put Cotiilion and Philomela in at Feildmg. J. M'Laughlin has leased from her breeder a filly by Bezonian—Sea Queen (dam of Some Kit). '" It is reported that Mr W. E. Stead will take a team to Sydney in the spring. H. Gray has the offer to go across and do the riding if he wants to. The writer considers Gray" is likely to remain a free lance next season. During the present season he has been subjected to a good deal of pinpricking in the Dominion, and I -would not be surprised if he settled on the other side permanently. Menelaus was taken through to Hastings, but showed signs of soreness after a gallop. His trainer did not care to risk a breakdown, and he was -withdrawn from the Cup. He will be brought homo, and is to go to Riccarton if he 6tands up to it. Cooing and Motuihi, who was taken to Hastings, join Mascot at Palmerston and go on to Auckland. Lone is putting four boxes on to his stable. H. Hone is at present head man there.
Rose Pink has freshened up fine witn a few weeks' spell, and will be galloping as well as ever at Easter. Mr Whitney may send Trentham Rose and Roumanm down the West Coast. The latter does best on soft tracks.
Red Signal and Matatua will probably be racing at Feilding at Easter time. Last Easter Bonnie Maid and Chimera are at the top of their form. They did no good this season until recently. Both horses were lucky enough to get in the weights, and Chimera has now won three times in succession. At Hastings yesterday vith a 71b penalty, she had to carry enly 7 10. & The local M.P. who races as Mr "Soames" is having a great run with Battle Array (Signor— Carissima), who took about three years to come right, and Bonnie Maid (Boniform —Happy Maid), who was bred by her owner. In the last two starts she has won the Wairarapa and Hawke's Bay Cups. Battle Array has won the last three races ho contested. ' Both horses were withdrawn from their C.J.C. autumn engagements before the appearance of the handicaps. _B. Deeley rode the horses named in their five wins; There was a remarkable sequence of successes in connection with the winners on the opening day of the Hawke's Bay meeting, and no fewer than five of the winners scored for the third time, and _ Star Lady just missed putting up a similar record. The winners were Aurore (Birkenhead — Eos), Hetana (Demosthenes —Fairy Gold), Taunaha (Demosthenes —Mangaroa), Battle Array, and Chimera.
