NEARLY 6000 DEATHS IN NEW

ZEALAND

WELLINGTON, January 21. According to the official report received by the Hon. G. W. Russell from the Registrar, the deaths in Zealand from influenza, or complications that supervened on that disease, totalled 5959 from October 1 to December 31. The latest details for prominent districts are: Auckland 1892, Taranaki 297, Hawke's Bay 305, Wellington 1537, Marlborough 42, Nelson 89, Westland 85, Canterbury 775, Otago 481, Southland 455. The deaths in the principal towns included in the preceding summary were: Auckland (including Avondale, Devonport, Ellerslie, and Takapuna) 1013, New Plymouth 93, Napier 104, Gisborne 58 Hamilton 152, Wellington 685, Featherston 181, Palmerston North 139, Wanganui 105, Blenheim 31, Nelson 28, Greymouth 57 Hokitika 23, Christchurch 4/7, Timaru 48! Dunedin 302. Invercargill 194. The following are tne numbers of deaths registered at the principal South Island towns during the period October 1 to December 31: Canterbury District-—Akaroa 16, Ashburton 46. Christchurch, 477, Kaiapoi 21, Lyttelton 22, Methven 11, Rangiora 19, Temuka 25, Timaru 48, Waimate 21, other tion districts 69; —total for the province, 775. Otago District.— Balclutha 12, Dunedin 302, Modgiel 15, Oamaru 59, Owaka 11, Port Chalmers 16. other registration districts 66; —total for Otago, 481. Southland.—Gore 41, Invercargill 194, Lumsden 11, Mataura 15, Nightcaps 21, Orer>uki 13, Otautau 26, Riverton 45. Tuatapero 11, Winton 41, Wyndham 26, other registration districts 12;—total 456. PACIFIC ISLANDS. WELLINGTON, January 23. The Minister of Public Health has received a telegram from the chief medical officer at Fiji reporting that clean bills of health have been issued in respect to all the islands. No fresh cases have been reported at Suva and Levuka since December 23, and none in Lautoka tince January 7»
