LIQUOR AT WELLINGTON RACES. THE "PROPHET" RUA.
A RESTRICTED LICENSE GRANTED. WELLINGTON, January 18. At a special meeting of the Hutt Licensing Committee, held yesterday, Lowe,. licensee of the Trentham Hotel, made application for a conditional tfoerise for the Trentham races. Sergeant Bird opposed the application on behalf of the police. Sergeant Bird stated that the grounds of objection to the issuing of a license were that it was not required, and the conduct of race meetings without licenses had greatly improved Tho proximity of the Trentham camp was also a reason why it should not be granted. In the event of the license being granted he made the suggestion that no liquor should be sold for consumption off the premises. A motion that • the application bo declined was supported by Messrs J. W. M'Ewen, J. Cotton, and W. Wearno. An amendment that the application be granted, subject to the condition that men from the military campa in hospital uniform be not supplied with liquor, was voted for by Messrs W. Cotton, M. Welsh, and the chairman (Mr Riddell), and a-tie thus resulted. Mr Riddell gave his casting vote in favour of the amendment, and the application was therefore granted, subject to the condition mentioned.
