LINER PORT HUNTER.
RUN DOWN- BY TUG. The Wellington office of the Commonwealth and Dominion .lane has received news by mail of the sinking in American ■waters' of the steamer Port Hunter. It appears that the Port Hunter was proceeding from Boston, caigo laden for St. Nazairo, France, when, she was run down bv the tug- Convingtbn on November 2. The Port Hunter was badly damaged, and was beached at Hcdgefenoe-Vmeyard Shoal, Nantucket. Salvage operations have been started by the United States navy. It is expected, however, that the damage will provo too serious for the liner to be saved. At Christmas, in 1917, the Port Hunter, while bound from Sydney to London, put into Wellington for bunkering. She was delayed here owing to some difficulty over her firemen. Captain Stafford was then in commajid of the vessel. The aPort Hunter is a vessel of 4062 tons £ross, of the following dimensions: — ength, 380 ft; beam, 49ft; depth, 25ft. She was built in 1905 by Hawthorn, Leslie, and Co., Newcastle, England.
