The harbourmaster at Whakatane reported on Thursday week that between 6.30 and 6.45 p.m. a rift on the south side of White Island was emitting smoke and flame to a height of at least 200 ft. Activity continued at intervals to half-past 2 the next morning, and at a quarter-past 2 in the afternoon the island was in violent eruption at the south and east.
