The year 1919 is a bad one for eclipses, so far as New Zealand is concerned. There ■will be a total eclipse of the sun on May 29-30, and an eclipse on November 23; the moon will be partially eclipsed on May 8. All these phenomena are, however, invisible in this country. The mine washed ashore at Oaonui on Christmas Day, according to the Taranaki Daily News, Is about 4ft in length, and at the thickest part measures about 2ft 6m. A report was received to the effect that a number of lifebelts had been found along the beach to as far north at Okato, ana that some were in the possession of th« Natives.
