MILITARY DEFAULTERS SENTENCED

Captain Myers, A.A.G., promulgated the following sentences on Friday afternoon, as the result of the court-martial held on three military defaulters at the Central Battery last Monday:— 45851 Private William Douglas Pearston,

absent from medical examination without leave. —Two years imprisonment in H.M. Prison, with hard labour. 76285 Private William Wallace Yeoman, absent from medical examination without leave. —Two years' imprisonment in H.M. Prison, with hard labour. 26566 Private Laurence Barton, failing to concentrate at Wanganui.—Two years imprisonment in H.M. Prison, with hard labour. The deserters were captured at Ellin Bay, Lake Wakatipu. MAORI SOLDIERS SENTENCED. AUCKLAND, December 17. A court-martial sentenced two Maori r©servists to 17 months' imprisonment with hard labour for disobedience of lawful commands. Six others were sentenced to 18 months' imprisonment. MEN IN MESOPOTAMIA. TRIBUTE BY COMMANDING OFFICER. WELLINGTON, December 18. Sir James Allen has received a message stating that the health of the wireless troop in Mesopotamia is generally good. The general officer commanding in Mesopotamia eent the captain of the troop, on their departure from France, a highly complimentary letter, thanking them for their excellent services and stating that all ranks had fully maintained and justified the high standard set by th© New Zealand troops in the war. Base Records has received particulars of the incident for which the Victoria Cross was awarded to Sergeant John Gilray Grant, of the New Zealand Expeditionary Forces, for gallantry on. the field of action. At Bancourt, on September 1, under pointblank fire at 20yds, he rushed enemy posts to right and left, showing conspicuous bravery. Information has been received that Sergeant Ramsay Davidson, son of Mrs W. H. Davidson, Napier street, Mornington, who left Canada for the front with the Eighth Canadian Reinforcements, has been awarded the _ D.C.M. for conspicuous services at Amiens. Sergeant Davidson was at one Mme_ employed in the warehouse of Bing, Harris, and Co., of Dunedin.
