WAR TROPHIES.
LABOUR MEMBERS DISSENT. ~ CHRISTCHURCH, June lj] At the City Council meeting to-night a letter was read from General Robin (Commandant of the Forces) announcing that certain trophies of war had beeiiSallotted! to Christohurch. The trophies had been captured by the Ist Canterbury Regiment and the 3rd Battalion of the Bifie Brigade. Cr D. G. Sullivan (Labour member) said ho did not think it was the desire of the council or fihe people of this city, or the people of New Zealand to take any steps to perpetuate, a spirit of 'militarism as the outcome of the war. If the trophies should fo anywhere let them go to the museum, ho aim of tho Allies was to put an end to militarism in all its forms, and he claimed that by putting these trophies in a publio place they would not assist this. He moved that tl e Commandant of the Forces be thanked for his offer, and that it bo suggested to him that tho proper place for those things was the Canterbury Museum. Cr Flesher moved as an amendment—- '' That the offer cf the eommandent bo accepted by the council, and that the Beserves Committee be instructed to find a convenient plaeo for them." After a brief discussion, the Mayor said no good purpose would be served by prolonging the discussion, and ho put the amendment, which was carried by 12 votes to 5, the minority being the Labour members.
