WELLINGTON, June 12. . A public meeting-, which was sparsely attended, was held last night to consider tho question of raising funds as a national tribute to tho valour and sacrifices of the French nation. Tho Mavor. who presided, read a letter from the" Acting-Prime Minister stating that New Zealand had already established a hospital for repatries in France, and acldina that he doubted the wisdom of attempting to raise further funds just now. Tho Minister of Internal Affairs had intu mated that he was against the scheme. Speeches were made strongly condemning the attitude of the Government, and committees were set tip to proceed with the rroject and wait on the Government _to ascertain the reason for the Acting-Primo Minister's letter.
