WAIKOUAITI COUNTY COUNCIL
The monthly mooting of tho Waikouaitt County Council, held on Friday, was attended by Crs Lalcy (chairman), M'Laohlan, Orbell, M'Leod, and Briscoe. HIDING REPORTS. The county inspector submitted the following reports on the various ridings : Hawksbury Riding.—The daymen have been engaged in surfacing the roads in Hawksbury Bush district, and are now engaged on the Main road at Tumai. Tha roads in tho Nenthom district are in fair order.—Approved. Merton Riding.—Thirty-eight tons of metal have been spread on tho WarringtonEvansdalo road, and tho remainder will. Erobably arrive next week. Metal has been Token to fill the holes on Park road, and several roads in this township have been surfaced. A portion of the Puketeraki road has beon surfaced and-the bridge afc Karitane repaired. There aro some bad holes in tho Main road, which will requira about 24 yards of rotten rock. M'Gillivray'i road also requires about 12 yards.—Approved, rotten rock to be procured for both roads. " North-East Valley Riding.—Tho Pine HIIJ roads are being surfaced, and about 12 yard* of stone on tho road is being broken.— Approved. Blueskin Riding.—The walls on the Lowe* Harbour road have been repaired and tha worst of tho ruts metalled. The Hayward Point road has been surfaced. The greater part of the metal has been carted for the Double Hill road, and is being broken. About seven chains of the unmetalled portion has been laid with manuka scrub and covered with clay. The gravel is being carted out for the Waitati Flat roads. —Approved. CORRESPONDENCE. The Otago Hospital and Charitable Aid Board wrote, notifying that the capital value of the rateable property in tho Waikouaiti County had been given at £764,747, and the amount of the council's levy for tha year was £BBO 17s 6d. —Received. Mr A. Pryde, Beaconsfield, wrote asking permission to remove a few loads of soil from the roadlino to improve tho entrance to his paddock.—Permission granted. Mr H T. Parata, Puketeraki, wrote on behalf of a meeting held recently ak Puketeraki. asking permission to remove tha fence running along tho path from Puketeraki station to the beach, erected sorno years ago by the Puketeraki Beautifying 5 Committee. Hs further asked for the removal of some trees and the widen ing of the road at the Puketeraki railway crossing. —The inspector was authorised to have tho trees cut down, and on the motion of Cr ■ Orbell it was decided to have the fenoo on tho road' to Karitane removed. James Apes and 13 other residents of the Puketeraki district wrote, asking tha council to support the proposal to have a cow-catcher crossing put in at "Maries," the third crossing north from Puketeraki.— It was decided to support tho request of the petitioners. Mr J. R. Glendining wrote asking permission vo out down two large trees on the roadline opposite his property at Warrington.—lnspector to report at next meeting. Tho Conveners of the Country Committee of the Otago and Southland Women's Patriotio Association's appeal wrote asking for the council's assistance in raising funds. —Received. THE MAIN NORTH ROAD. The .Town Clerk, -Dunedin, wroto with reference to the council's application for. assistance to maintain portion of tho North road stating that the matter had not been lost sight of, and that the council would be definitely advised in a week or two. — The Inspector*submitted a special report on the condition of the Mnin road from Upper Junction to Evansdale, stating 'that the level portions of the road were getting full of pot holes again. The only remedy was to put a coat of metal over it.—The town clerk's letter was received and the inspector's report approved. GENERAL. The question of fixing th« rates for the ensuing year was discussed. —Cr Briscoe said ho was in favour of the rates remaining at £d until there was evidence that the users of the Main North road would contribute something to repair the damago they did.—The Chairman said if it had not been for tho motors the present rates would have been ample to keep the roada in repair.—lt was decided to leave the rates 03 at present, Cr M'Leod opposing the motion. Tho decision will come up for confirmation at next meeting. Mr M. Thomson, Dunedin, waited on the council to ask it 'to remove the three top gates on tho road from Hayward Point to Murdering Beach.—The Chairman said these gates were not legally there, and had never been applied for. There were about 24 chains of fencing required on the old road.—On the motion of Cr Orbell the matter was left in the hands of tha Chairman and the members for the riding, with power to act. Accounts for the month of May amounting to £243 4s 8d were passed for payment.
