NAVAL DEFENCE.
DUTIES OF NEW ZEALAND. AUCKLAND, June 1. Sir James Allen., in a speech at a social given by the Auckland branch of the Navy League," said that New Zealandcrs had reason to be ashamed of the small sum they had contributed to the upkeep of the British navy. Wo had certainly made a small beginning, but we would have to take a much larger share in the maintenance of the navy in the future in regard both to men and money. In tho time to come also wo would have to face tho questions, not only of contributing to the cost of the ships, but also to finding ships ourselves. This might be a long way ahead, but it assuredly would come. In the meantime, he believed New Zealand must provide moro money in order to afford our young men opportunities of taking their part ;*n future naval development. Of course, no such development would be sound if it did not provide for the right of tho Mother Country to concentrate the whole of these shins as part of an Imperial navy wherever such concentrations were needed.
