FIRES.
EKETAHUNA, May 9. The 14-roomed residence of Mr Cecil Kebbell, of Tehoe station, Alfredton, with the contents, was totally destroyed by fire at 3 a.m. yesterday. Some of the occupants had to make their escape in their night attire. The origin of the fire is a mystery. INVERCARGILL, May 9. The Economic drapery establishment, a two-storey brick building in the main block, owned by Undrill and Brass, was gutted by fire last night. The stock was completely destroyed. Insurances: On the building, £2250; on the stock (valued at £2500), £2OOO.
At 4.20 a.m. on the Bth inst. an incipient fire was discovered in an attic of the Eastern Extension Cable Company's office in Wellington. The flames were quickly extinguished by the officer in charge, and the damage done negligible. But for the early discovery the fire might have done serious damage to the plant, the value of which can scarcely be estimated at the present moment.. The cause of the fire is a mystery, which the police are endeavouring to solve. It is only four years since 'the. cable company's premises at Wakapuaka were destroyed by fire under mysterious circumstances.
