THE CHRISTCHURCH DEMONSTRATION.
MAN SENT TO PRISON. CHRISTCHURCH, May 6.
In the Magistrate's Court to-day Herbert Mackersey was charged with assaulting Constable Bosworth while the latter was in the execution of his duty. The case arose out of the disturbances last Monday, on the occasion of the departure of a reinforcement draft.
The evidence for tho prosecution was that the constable was assaulted from behind and thrown to the ground. Mr Malloy, for the defence, said tho accused had been a miner on the West Coast. Ho had come to Christchureh and enlisted, and was ready to go on Monday. In view of the evidence, he would not attempt to deny that accused committed the assault. As he was anxious to go to the front, counsel urged that a fine should be inflicted.
The Magistrate said these assaults would have to bo put down with a firm hand. He sentenced tho defendant to three months' imprisonment.
