MONTECILLO RED CROSS HOME

BEDS FROM ROSLYN RESIDENTS. A meeting of Roslyn and Kaikorai residents to consider the proposal to endow a, bed or beds in the new Red Cross Convalescent Home at Montecillo was held at the Roslyn Salvation Army Barracks on Saturday evening. Tho movement originated with the Roslyn-Kaikorai branch of the Otago and Southland Women's Patriotic Association, and there were about 40 people present. Mr R. S. Black occupied the chair, and in explaining the proposal pointed out that if the 6000 residents in tho district concerned each gave a shilling three beds would be provided for. They did not wish a few large but rather that the whole of the people should show their sympathy by contributing something, however small. With reference to tho control of the institution, he said they would have the utmost confidence in that when they knew that Colonel Cowie-Nicolls and Major Fleming represented the military side of the management. It was intended that the matron should! be a thoroughly trained nurse, who had been at the war. Thev should aim at visiting every house in the district to solicit subscriptions. He proposed a motion expressing the sympathy of the meeting with the work of the Convalescent Home, and pledging those, present to do their bes£j;o secure at least two beds in it from the*uistrict.

Mr S. F. Benton seconded the motion. Mr W. Scoular expressed the opinion that the chairman was letting Roslyn ofi' far too lightly in suggesting contributions of only a shilling a head. Dr Barnett had predicted that this most necessary movement would have to be extended largely. The speaker's statement that Roslyn should aim at five beds rather than two met with the evident approval of the meeting. He announced donations of £2O from Mrs James Scoular, of Pukerangi, £lO from Miss H. I. Scoular, and £2O from himself. In reply to questions, Mrs Stronach stated that it would cost about £2OOO a year to run the institution, and half of this would be provided by the Government. The women would have to work for the remainder. , The Chairman stated that ho was Riving a bed himself apart from what he would give to tho present movement. They would have to rouse up Roslyn in this matter. The motion was carried. Mrs Stronach and Miss Bcgg were appointed to represent tho local branch of the Women s Patriotic Association in the enterprise. All thoso present at the meeting were enrolled as canvassers. It was reported that some £65 was already in hand. RED CROSS EFFORT. The Otago Women's Club had charge of the Red Cross shop at the old Post Office on Saturday morning, and gathered an excellent display of useful goods. The special object of tho effort was to raise £IOO to endow a cot from tho Women's Club in the Red Cross Convalescent Home at Montecillo. Valuable assistance "was given by country friends, who sent in a liberal supply of fruit, poultry, and other produce. The stall was laden with jams, flowers, fruit, books, and other useful and attractive goods. The whole effort was very successful, and although the result cannot be exactly stated yet, as there are many small amounts still to come in, sufficient has already been received to make it certain that the full amount desired will soon be in hand*
